Beaminster is well on its way to becoming a hedgehog friendly town.
We have already held our inaugural meeting and a second public meeting will be announced shortly. This hedgehog conservation scheme is the brainchild of the Dorset Mammal Group (DMG).
As hedgehogs travel up to one mile every night in their quest to find enough food and a mate, the DMG is trying to make their life easier in towns and villages across Dorset. Residents are being encouraged to develop hedgehog friendly streets by making holes in, or under garden fences and walls for hedgehogs to pass through. The DMG is also asking residents to adopt hedgehog friendly activities in gardens by not using slug pellets, leaving areas of rough ground, creating log or brushwood piles and offering hedgehogs supplementary food and water. There is also an on-going publicity campaign to draw attention to the dangers hedgehogs face in our towns and villages such as busy roads, drowning in ponds and swimming pools and injuries caused by dogs and garden machinery.
